The 21st of June is the International Aniridia Day, that our community celebrates worldwide on the same date as the solstice – a property of how high the sun is in the sky.
We chose this date because the brightness and position of the sun significantly affects the lives of people with aniridia.
This year, on this day, we would like to focus on two words: research and together.
Research, we know, represents for us the concrete opportunity to get a better understanding of the condition and to develop new and effective treatments, with the perspective of improving the quality of life of people living with aniridia.
And this is possible only working together: among patients, at national and international level, and between patients and doctors. We have already moved many steps in this direction, but there is still a long way to go.

This is why we are happy to recall on this day two key activities that Aniridia Europe is involved in:
– the 8th European Aniridia Conference, which will be held in Sofia (Bulgaria), 17-19 April 2026; the website aniridiaconference.org is in progress, stay tuned!
– the Restore Vision project, a project funded by the European Commission to develop new treatments for seven rare eye diseases included aniridia; Aniridia Europe’s role in this project is exactly to create a bridge between the patient communities and the scientists; full information at https://restorevision-project.eu/ .
